Centennial celebrations of the
Sheet Metal Workers International Association
On November 15, 1902 the Sheet Metal Workers
International Association Local 280 received its
charter as a union. They were proud to celebrate
their hundredth anniversary several years ago
and retained our firm to coordinate and manage
a full year of centennial celebrations for union
members, their families and their friends in the
community.
We launched the year by designing a special
calendar which showcased photos of some of the
more dramatic projects completed by Sheet Metal
Workers in BC. Each month highlighted significant
dates in the union’s hundred-year history.
We worked with Mohr Good Ideas to assemble a
special store of specially-monogrammed items ranging
from jackets to golf balls carrying the special
centennial graphic developed to help celebrate
the year.
The special Centennial Newsletter was developed
to publicize the year’s events Fishing Derby
at Pender Harbour, Golf Tournament in Langley,
Picnic in Belcarra, and a Christmas Skating Party
in Surrey. The highlight of the year’s celebrations
was the centennial banquet held on Nov. 15 100
years to the day from the date on the union’s
charter. We engaged the services of PGI Events
Management to convert the two ballrooms of the
Bayshore Hotel into an extravaganza of dining
and dancing themed to the eras of the past hundred
years. Fully 1200 members, spouses, friends and
honoured guests participated in what was considered
to be the most lavish centennial banquet of any
union in Canada.
The year’s events were captured in photos, which
formed the basis for a souvenir photo book prepared
and mailed to all members at the end of the centennial
celebrations. All aspects of the celebrations
publicity, registrations, prizes, give-aways,
talent, organization, finances and collateral
design and print were our responsibility.
